Bulldog Update - Mar 8th 2011
Its a big week for Arsenal at the Bulldog...

Football Fans,

There are sixteen teams still competing for the coveted European Championship.  Over the next week, that number will be whittled down to eight remaining sides.  This weeks Champions League fixtures kick off this afternoon with Barcelona hosting Arsenal in a match for the ages.  Arsenal carry a 2-1 aggregate goal advantage into the Nou Camp, and will be keen to dash the hopes of the Barcelona faithful.   Barcelona has other ideas, as Messi and company are eager to repeat last years result against their North London rivals (6-3 on aggregate).  Injuries and suspensions may play a big part in this one, as Barca are without their central defensive pairing of Carlos Puyol (knee injury) and Gerrard Piquet (suspension).  Arsenal have their own problems to deal with, as they are without Theo Walcott (ankle).  On the bright side (for Arsenal) Cesc Fabregas is expected to return as Captain, and Robin Van Persie (despite being ruled out earlier with a knee problem) has recovered well enough to travel with his team.    Whoever comes out on top in this massive fixture will surely have to be considered a serious contender to hoist the Champions League trophy on May 28th.  Our other big fixture of the afternoon pits Shaktar v Roma.  Shaktar holds a 3-2 aggregate advantage, and home field advantage going into the second leg.  It will be a difficult test for a struggling Roma side.

Wednesday sees Tottenham host Italian giants A.C. Milan at White Hart lane for another massive Champions League fixture.  The North London boys hold a 1-0 aggregate advantage, thanks to Peter Crouchs beautifully crafted tally in Italy a week ago.  Milan will be without their fearsome defender Gattuso, after he acted like a nut in the first leg and received his marching orders.  Tottenham will be bolstered by the return of Gareth Bale, who has been on fire in the Champions League competition this year.  The afternoons second fixture sees German side Schalke hosting Spanish club Valencia.  Schalke have the away goal advantage, despite being tied 1-1 on aggregate, and are still wary of their talented Spanish rivals.

The mid week action continues Thursday, as two English clubs continue their Europa League run.  First Liverpool travel to Sporting Braga, followed by Manchester City facing Dynamo Kiev.

The weekend brings us FA Cup Sixth Round action, and there are only eight teams remaining in the competition.  Saturday morning we start early with Birmingham facing Bolton in the 5:45am slot.  This match will be followed by a live Npower Championship fixture between Derby County and Swansea.  Swansea are holding second in the table, but they have four teams nipping at their heels and can not afford a slip up.  This all leads us to the match of the weekend, a sixth round clash between EPL giants Manchester United and Arsenal.  Whoever comes out on top will no doubt be perceived as the favorite to advance to the final.  The implications are even greater as these two clubs are in a dogfight for supremacy in the Premiership.   There is no love lost between them, and this should be a very hard fought battle.  The atmosphere at the Bulldog will be electric!

To wrap up another great week of Football, we have two more FA Cup fixtures slated for Sunday morning.  In our 8am game, Stoke will try to revenge a 3-0 thrashing delivered by West Ham in last weeks premiership meeting between the two clubs.  Then we see Manchester City host Reading (the only non Prem side remaining in the competition) at 10:45am.

We are only ten days out from the Colorado Rapids first home fixture of the season vs. Portland, and they return to DSG as Champions.  Portland will be travelling with more than two hundred fans for their first ever MLS match.  We must have a strong presence to support our hometown club.  The Bulldog Supporters Group (see below) will be hosting a massive tailgate, and bus trip, to help ring in the 2011 season.  The event details can be found at: www.bulldogsupporters.com/events/detail.php?eventID=45.  I encourage anyone that is planning to attend to check out this link, and be sure to make your reservations online to secure your spot for this big match.  Space is limited, so be sure to rsvp as soon as possible!
