Bulldog Update - Jun 7th 2011
CONCACAF Gold Cup & the Portland Trip at the Bulldog!

Friends of Football,

The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Football Association (CONCACAF) was founded in 1961, with the first regional Championship being held in 1963.  The tournament, held every two years, was initially a six team round robin with the Champion holding honors for the region.  In 1973 the stakes were raised, as the Champion would earn a berth in the World Cup Finals.  The tournament continued under that format until 1991, when it became the CONCACAF Gold Cup, with eight teams participating.  No longer would the winner go to the W.C. Finals, but every other year a berth in the Confederations Cup is at stake.  The USA won the inaugural Gold Cup, followed by three consecutive wins for Mexico.  In 2000 the field was increased to twelve teams, and Canada made history by winning its first major Championship in over one hundred years.  Since that time the USA has taken three titles and Mexico two.  Mexico are the current holders of the trophy, after beating the U.S. 5-0 in the 2009 Final.  This years Champion will be invited to the 2013 Confederations Cup to be held in Brazil.

Tonight the USMNT face our northern neighbors from Canada, to kick off their 2011 Gold Cup campaign (6pm).  Canada will be keen to get the upset, knowing a victory against the U.S. would nearly ensure a berth in the second round. The U.S. is coming off an absolute thrashing by World Champions Spain, and as usual look under prepared and bit lost under the helm of Bob Bradley.  His interesting tactical choice of starting second stringers v Spain was dumbfounding, and his passionless approach to coaching is frustrating.  The teams offense has been non-existent under his tenure, with our midfield and defense providing our only opportunities.  I often wonder how much our success can be attributed to our starting team plying their trade overseas, and how much has anything to do with Bradleys coaching.  We should be the favorites in this tournament, but we look set to struggle against our regional rivals Mexico, Costa Rica, Jamaica, and Honduras.  As always, U.S. fans will be hoping for the best from our National side.  The U.S. will return to action with another tough test, Saturday evening, when they face Panama in their second group stage game.  Mexico and Costa Rica got off to a hot start in the tournament, with both sides winning 5-0 in their first match.  They will finish their group play Sunday when they face each other at 6pm in the game that will decide who wins their group.  Should be a terrific match.  Omar Cummings, the Rapids prolific striker, should make his return from injury for the Jamaican National team during the tournament. The Reggae Boyz started strong with a 4-0 win over tiny island neighbor Grenada.  The Bulldog will be featuring all the Gold Cup action so be sure to join us as we enjoy the battle for regional supremacy!

Our hometown boys, the Colorado Rapids, make their way out to Portland for a late Saturday evening match this week (8:30pm).  Plenty of Rapids supporters will be making the trek out to Oregon, for one of our most anticipated road games of the season.  Portland has struggled on the road, but their home has been a fortress (having only lost to D.C.).  The Rapids will be playing hard for the win, as they are well aware how important these three points are. The Timbers Army (Portlands massive supporters group) will be welcoming us for pints on Friday evening (at the Bitter End Pub), and hosting a joint tailgate before the match on Saturday.  Here at home, the Bulldog will be hosting the away game viewing party for those of you that are not making the trip, with the U.S. v Panama game directly preceding this fixture ( http://www.bulldogsupporters.com/events/detail.php?eventID=91 ).  Both games fall partially in to our Happy Hour, and other football specials will be available.  Lets all keep our fingers crossed for a positive result away, and enjoy this great evening of football no matter where you are watching the games!
