Friends of Football,

You may have missed the Bulldog Update last week, and for good reason.  I jetted off to Florida for my Brothers wedding, and enjoyed a few days on the beach with my Family.  The vacation left me well rested, despite the hundreds of beers and other libations I put away on the trip.  Now that the update is back, I thought this would be the perfect time to change the format just a bit.  As you can see I have changed the name to the World Football Update.  Essentially not much will change.  There will still be a short summary of the major matches of the week, a schedule of televised games and kick off times, and mention of specials and other happenings associated with the Pub(s).  The major difference is, the update will be encompassing two Pubs, both the Bulldog and the brand new Three Lions (Click Here for Westword Article) .  I will be stepping down as manager of the British Bulldog, and passing the reins on to Wendi Reed.  Wendi has loads of experience in the business, and is very passionate about football.  I have no doubt she will continue to carry the torch for the Bulldog, and ensure that it remains a premier viewing spot for the game we love.  The British Bulldog will always be the first true football pub in Denver, and the Three Lions will expand on the concept as the sport grows here in Colorado.

There are three major events occurring in our World of football this week, and the first falls this Saturday night.  The USMNT takes on regional rival Mexico in the Gold Cup Final, to be played in front of nearly one hundred thousand fans in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.  In addition to the regional honor at stake for the winner, there is an additional prize to play for.  The 2011 Gold Cup winner earns a berth in the Confederations Cup, to be held in Brazil one year before the World Cup (2013).  The Confederations Cup is a unique opportunity to face the regional Champions from around the globe, in the same venues used during the upcoming World Cup.  Last time this was up for grabs the U.S. earned the berth, and made the final of the tournament, only to lose to eventual Champions Brazil.  Mexico will be at their best, as they strive to make sure they are the team that represents CONCACAF in 2013.  The U.S. has yet to play a game in this tournament that could truly be called impressive, perhaps (lets hope) they are saving it for this Final!

Sunday morning brings us the next major event of the weekend, as the first match of the 2011 Womens World Cup (http://www.fifa.com/womensworldcup/index.htmlkicks off with Nigeria taking on France.  Different then the men, the USWNT are considered to be a favorite in their respective World Cup.  Much of the World has closed the gap on the dominance of the United States team in Womens football, none the less big things are expected for them.  Abby Wambach is their striker and talisman, and if she performs, all should go well!  The Bulldog will be featuring the Cup for the duration, with most mid week early matches being taped for replay.  The bar will open at 10am both Monday and Tuesday of next week for Englands and the United States 10am fixtures.

To wrap up a great weekend we have our hometown lads, the Colorado Rapids, travelling to take on the Columbus Crew.  The Bulldog will be hosting an away game viewing party, with kick off scheduled for 6pm.  The Rapids sent Columbus packing from the 2010 playoffs on Columbus home turf, so I would assume they want some revenge.  The Rapids are coming off the disappointment of a home loss, that everyone feels we should have gotten more from.  So three points for the good guys would be a big boost for a team that needs to regain its footing.  A big boost could be the return of Brian Mullan to the midfield, and the second consecutive game in quite some time Conor Casey and Omar Cummings will get to run together up front.  Make your way down to the Bulldog, and wear your colors, this should be a great match!
