World Football Update - Aug 29th 2012
Feature Matches
August closes with two big matches, a Clasico in Spain, and a Friday night primetime match for ourColorado Rapids. The second leg of the Spanish Super Cup kicks off at 2:30pm this afternoon, with Barcelona holding a slim one goal advantage over Real Madrid. The winner will hoist silverware, and fire the first salvo in a season long melee between these two giants of the football world. Barcelonas talisman,Leo Messi, is off to a scorching start with five goals scored in his first three games of 2012/13, four in La Liga and one in the Super Cup. Madrid will be pinning their hopes on a strong performance from Christiano Ronaldo, and will have the advantage of being at home in this second leg. Ronaldo is off to a slower start, having fired one goal so far in last weeks Super Cup fixture.
Friday night (8:30pm kickoff) our Colorado Rapids take on the Portland Timbers, in a battle to stay off the bottom of the table. This one is for pride, and to make things more interesting we face the Timbers again the middle of next week. The Rapids hold a slim two point advantage over Portland in the standings, but the Timbers have a game in hand. New acquisition Hendry Thomas may make his first appearance for the Rapids, bringing some much needed reinforcement to the midfield. Former Rapid, Kosuke Kimura, will be playing his first match against the club he helped to win the MLS title. It will be strange, and kind of sad, to see him suit up against his former teammates.
We have a fully loaded schedule on the weekend, with an early start both Saturday and Sunday morning.Liverpool take on Arsenal at home in our feature match of the weekend, kicking off at 6:30am Sunday morning. Liverpool is coming off a strong performance against Man City last week, while Arsenal have not found the net in their first two matches. To their credit, the Gunners have not conceded a goal either, coming away with two draws to start the season. Like any clash of the titans in the EPL, this should be a highly entertaining clash!
On the Horizon
The USMNT resumes their qualifying campaign for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, taking on Jamaica next Friday night, while the Rapids face the Timbers again midweek.
