Feature Matches
On a day of World Cup Qualifiers, there are three matches that stick out like a sore thumb. The first two kick off at 2pm, with European powerhouses France and Spain clashing at the Stade de France in Paris, and surprising Montenegro hosting England at home. France is now in command of their qualifying group after a big win last Friday, while Spain holds second after a disappointing draw to Finland last week. France know they can put themselves in a great position to take the Group with a win. England can move top of the Group with a win over Montenegro, but a loss would be devastating leaving them five points clear of the top. If they don't win the Group, a playoff with Spain or Portugal would be likely to qualify. Roy Hodgson's side put in a strong professional performance on Friday, and will hope to build on that.
Our match of the day has the USMNT facing Mexico in the imposing confines of Estadio Azteca, kicking off at 8:30pm (pregame at 7:30pm). After the big win at home on Friday, the U.S. has alleviated a bit of the pressure that was building around the team. They will be looking to add to what was a great team performance against Costa Rica, knowing that a win or draw would be a dagger to Mexico's heart. Jermaine Jones suffered an ankle injury, and will not be available for this match. Brad Guzan was epic on Friday, and he has the confidence of the team, which could play a big role. Mexico has been struggling a bit, and they will rely heavily on the Chicharito-Gio Dos Santos combination for attack. This should be one for the ages!
We finish the week with Club football starting early Saturday morning, with loads of great games from England, Italy, and Spain. The Rapids host Portland at home Saturday afternoon, still fighting for their first win of the season. I think it is worth it to mention Clint Irwin, the rookie goalie who has been deputizing since Pickens went down with Injury. The kid has been amazing, and he has faced an onslaught of shots and tough saves. Perhaps the one bright spot in an otherwise dismal start to year two of the Pareja era. Tickets and bus shuttles are available to the match, and the Portland game is always a great time. Cheers, have a great week, and let's go USA!
On the Horizon
Next week we have a 5:30am Monday kick off (before work?) for Chelsea and Manchester United in the FA Cup, Champions League Quarterfinals are set to return, and the Rapids host the second leg of the Rocky Mountain Cup against Salt Lake!
