World Football Update - July 30th 2013
Feature Matches

Things are good in the World of Football, at least from the perspective of a Colorado Rapids and USMNT supporter. The Rapids have fought their way back towards the top of the table, and this week they have a massive showdown with their rivals, and Western Conference leaders, Salt Lake. That's right, the Rapids are in second place in the Western Conference, and have a chance to go level at the top with a win on Saturday! In addition to topping the group, our boys in Burgundy would take back the Rocky Mountain Cup for the first time in...well a long time! If you are a casual MLS fan, maybe attending only a few matches a year, you won't want to miss this one. If you are die hard Rapids supporter we know you will be there, and ready to cheer the team on to victory! It would be terrific to see a sellout in support of our team for this one! Reservations for ticketing and shuttle service can be made at www.coloradosupporters.com/reservations .

A quick shout out to the USMNT and Jurgen Klinsmann seems appropriate. After supporting the USMNT for thirty years, through all the ups and downs, the different coaches and players, the frustration, I can't begin to tell you how refreshing it is to see our National Team playing the game the way it was intended to be played! Eleven wins in a row, can somebody pinch me? Dominant in the Gold Cup, not just squeaking by. Scoring beautiful goal after beautiful goal, defending tenaciously, playing the full 90 at 110%. One touch passing! Playing as a team, not as individuals. It is nothing short of amazing what Coach Klinsmann has done with this squad in two years time. Let's think back to a few of the accomplishments during his tenure, the first win on European soil in over three years (Slovenia), beat Italy for the first time ever in a stadium the Italians were undefeated in, undefeated against Mexico with Klinsmann at the helm (including a coveted and first ever win at Estadio Azteca), beat #2 ranked Germany, loads of new players and talent, top of the Hexagonal for WCQ, and Gold Cup Champions! Sometimes change is difficult to accept, and things did start slowly for Klinsmann when he took over. The results are undeniable though, he was just the tonic the U.S. program needed to take it to the next level. It seems there is no where to go but up for the USA, and a year out from the World Cup, that is right where you want to be!

Besides International Friendlies and the start of England's Championship, there is one other game of note that takes place this week. On Wednesday evening the MLS All Stars take on Serie A side Roma, with a 7pm kick off. Ever since the MLS switched to the format of playing against European Clubs in the All Star game, these matches have been really entertaining! Be sure to drop in Wednesday night to see how our domestic league talent matches up against a strong European side. American Michael Bradley plies his trade for Roma, and will likely suit up against the MLS' best eleven!

On the Horizon

The Colorado Rapids travel to Chivas for a rare Sunday evening clash with the Goats! The Community Shield kicks off Sunday morning in England, with Wigan facing Manchester United, and the 2013/14 Bundesliga campaign is set to kick off!
