Feature Matches

A bit of magic, that would be an appropriate way to describe the Colorado Rapids demolition of the Seattle Sounders this past Saturday.  The Rapids came out flying, and before the Sounders knew what hit em, the hometown boys had built an insurmountable lead.  Adding insult to injury Colorado's designated player, Gabriel Torres, finished the match with a brilliant strike.  Now it's off to San Jose to drive a dagger into the heart of the Earthquakes!  San Jose still cling to the hopes that a late run will see them into the playoffs, but they are meeting Pareja's inspired Rapids at just the wrong time.   A win here and the Rapids can book a 2013 postseason berth.  The match kicks off live at 8:30pm, but get in early to check out some other MLS action.  We will also be giving away tickets to the final home match (10/19), and raffling a signed Rapids soccer ball at halftime (to benefit Connect for Health Colorado).  Don't miss an incredible night of domestic football at the Lions this Wednesday!

The final window for World Cup Qualifying opens up on the weekend, with a bundle of great matches slated for Friday!  The action starts in Europe mid day, with Germany v Ireland and England v Montenegro headlining.  CONMEBOL and CONCACAF action begins in the afternoon, with Honduras v Costa Rica at 3pm, leading into USA v Jamaica at 4:30pm.  The U.S. has climbed to 13th in FIFA's World rankings, and only a spot in the top eight will get them a seeded spot in Brazil.  That may be impossible, but the only way to have a chance is to dominate their final two matches.  Even if the USA don't get a top seed, winning the CONCACAF Hex will be a big statement for Klinsmann's side.  To finish the evening we have a fight to the death between Mexico and Panama.  Both teams sit fourth in the Hex standings, and are tied on points and goal differential.  The loser of this match will find themselves on the outside looking in, with little hope of Qualification with only one matchday left.

We have two other highlights of note this weekend.  Saturday night the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Japan will be featured on the balcony of the Pub, with a 12am start time.  We had an awesome crew in last week, and we're looking forward to hosting another great night of F1 action!  Sunday evening we are featuring a huge Cascadia Cup clash, as Portland host Seattle at 7pm.   The outcome will have huge implications of how the final standings in the Western Conference will pan out.

On the Horizon

Next week we have the final day of World Cup Qualification to look forward to, with plenty of meaningful matches on tap.  On the weekend European Club football returns, and the Rapids take on Vancouver at home in the first installment of a home and away to finish the season.
