World Football Update
Feature Matches

A big day in World Cup Qualifying is on tap today!  The action starts in the afternoon with England facing Poland at Wembley.  England can earn an outright berth in Brazil with a win, but a loss or tie would likely see Ukraine go top.  This will be a nervy affair for the Three Lions, as they would like to avoid a playoff at all costs.  We will also have coverage for Sweden v Germany and Spain v Georgia at lunch, with Spain only needing a point to clinch top spot in their Group.  Later in the day we have CONMEBOL and CONCACAF action kicking off.  At 5:30pm Argentina face Uruguay, and Chile take on Ecuador.  These matches ar a fight for position, with Uruguay currently sitting in the playoff spot at 22pts.  Chile and Ecuador both have 25pts, and a win or a tie for either side will see them safely to Brazil.  If Uruguay fail to move up in the standings, they will play a one match playoff against the 5th place team from Africa.  The USA kick off against Panama at 7:30pm, in their final match of the Hex.  Panama, and the Rapid's Gabriel Torres, are on the verge of elimination.  They will need help from Costa Rica (who face Mexico), and will have to score a resounding victory over the USA to have any hope of advancing.  The USA sit safely at the top of the Group, and can not be overtaken.  A win may improve their FIFA ranking, giving them a shot at a seeded spot in Brazil.

In MLS the race couldn't be tighter in both Conferences, which effectively means the playoffs have begun.  Our Colorado Rapids face a difficult Vancouver side in a home and away series to finish the season.  The Whitecaps are still well in the hunt, and a win for them here would be a devastating blow to the Rapid's playoff hopes.  On the other hand a win for the Rapids at home this weekend, and they will have one foot in the door for the postseason.  Dillon Powers and Gabriel Torres will be back in the lineup, giving the Rapids a boost after a dismal performance against San Jose last week.  If you support the Rapids, make sure you make your way to DSG this Saturday (4pm), as the Club will need their 12th man in this final home match of the season!  As always, shuttle service will be provided from the Pub (reservations can be made at www.coloradosupporters.com/reservations ).

European Club football returns on the weekend, with an early open Saturday morning for Newcastle v Liverpool.  A great spate of matches from Spain and England feature throughout the day, leading to the Rapids huge clash with Vancouver.  We finish the weekend with EPL and MLS, and a Sunday night Broncos fixture.

On the Horizon

Next week Champions League returns, highlight matches include Arsenal v Borussia DortmundAC Milan v Barcelona, and Real Madrid v Juventus.  The first Clasico of the year, between archrivals Barcelona and Real Madrid, takes place Saturday morning.  Sunday we have Chelsea taking on Manchester City, in the highlight EPL match of the weekend!  The Colorado Rapids finish their 2013 regular season campaign away to Vancouver, in what promises to be a very meaningful match!
