Feature Matches

The second half of the Champions League Group Stage begins this week, with each side already having played their Group opponents once.  The race is on to qualify for the round of sixteen, and some Clubs will look to book their spot this week.  Teams that can qualify with a win include Bayern Munchen, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Paris St. Germain.  Manchester United are looking a good bet to advance from their Group as well.  Teams that might find themselves eliminated with a loss include Juventus, Marseille, Ajax, CSKA, Real Sociedad, and a few others.  The race is too tight to call in Groups E, F, and H, bringing us our Champions League matches of the week.  Chelsea take on Schalke in Group E, with both Clubs tied on points (6pts).  Barcelona face AC Milan, with the Spaniards holding a slim 1pt lead at the top of Group H.  Last but not least Arsenal travel to Borussia Dortmund in a fight for the top of Group F, with both Clubs tied on 6pts.  Throw Napoli (6pts) in to the fight in F, and you have the Group of Death taking shape.  This should be a great week of Champions League football, with a clear picture of the favorites to advance taking shape.

On the domestic front, the 2013 MLS Cup playoff race is in full swing.  The Eastern Conference Semifinal second leg matches take place on Wednesday night.  New England hold a 2-1 aggregate advantage over Sporting K.C., and the Houston Dynamo are tied 2-2 with the New York Red Bulls.  Thursday evening the Western Conference Semifinals play out, with back to back matches.  First Los Angeles try to protect their 1-0 aggregate advantage away to Salt Lake, followed by Portland defending their 2-0 advantage over Seattle at home.  All these matches are do or die, with four teams going home at the end of the day.  The four remaining sides will begin the Conference Finals on the weekend with the East playing Saturday afternoon, and the West playing Sunday evening.

Our feature match of the weekend kicks off at 9am Sunday morning, with Manchester United battling Arsenal!  United are just starting to find their form, while the Gunners sit atop the table in the EPL.  This is a pivotal match for both Clubs, that may set the tone for the remainder of the season.

On the Horizon

Next week we feature International Friendlies, and World Cup Qualification matches.  The field is almost set for the 2014 World Cup, with only a handful of spots still up for grabs.  Teams still fighting for a spot include Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, Sweden, France, Ukraine, Iceland, Croatia, Greece, Romania, Jordan, and Uruguay.  In Africa five spots remain, with Ghana looking most likely to book their spot.
