Rapids improve to 3-1-1 with win against Revs
Colorado secures another road victory in Foxboro.
Apr 26th 2010

In what is turning out to be the franchises best start to a season, the Colorado Rapids have again benefitted from a second half goal to win a game.

Pablo Mastroenis 73rd minute strike, a blistering shot from outside the box, sealed all three points for the Rapids. Conor Casey did well to hold the ball up near the penatly spot, then found Mastroeni cutting in from the midfield. The resulting thunderbolt sliced past former Colorado keeper Preston Burpo.

Long-range shots were fashionable in the match, as Mehdi Ballouchy opened scoring 13 minutes in with an outside strike of his own. His bouncing shot befuddled Burpo as it found the lower corner of the net.

Jeff Larentowicz almost added to the scoreline with his own shot from distance. The midfielder would have loved to score against his former team, but Burpo got just enough of a hand on the ball to send it trickling wide.

The highlight of the match, and potentially the season, was nearly in the 33rd minute as Omar Cummings drew the defense in the box, shielded the ball, then flicked it with precision to a streaking Ballouchy. The Moroccan flung himself into the air to strike the ball towards the upper left corner of the goal. Unfortunately, the ball clattered against the frame, denying a brilliant goal. Burpo then recovered to deny Casey on the rebound.

The only blemish for the Rapids came on yet another set piece. This time, however it would be hard to blame any one individual, as Marko Perovics 18th minute free kick swerved with pace above the wall into the upper corner, just ahead of the outstretched Matt Pickens. While a brilliant goal, Rapids coach Gary Smith will surely have been disappointed to fall victim to so many goals coming from dead balls so far this campaign.

Back at the pub, the atmosphere was boisterous as the BSGs viewing party was well attended. The well-struck goals gave fans something positive to sing about, and it appeared that everyone had a good night out.

The Rapids play twice in short order, facing the Earthquakes in San Jose on Saturday, then hosting Landon Donovan and the Galaxy on the following Wednesday in Commerce City.
