Bulldog and Rapids Kick the Season off Right
BSG kicks off 2011 with a pig roast, 400 Portland fans, a championship celebration & a Rapids win.
Mar 22nd 2011

The savory smell of a roast pig, seven kegs, and the largest tailgate in Colorado Rapids history preceded the perfect defense of the MLS Cup, a smashing 3-1 triumph over the Portland Timbers. The Colorado Rapids and the Bulldog Supporters Club picked up right where we left off last year. Our very own Lane Ahern and friends spent Friday night and all day Saturday preparing a 250 pound pig and all but a few morsels were eaten by the more than 500 revelers. Jenn Gleason made 1200 jell-o shots, which helped raise $422 in donations for the Red Cross’s efforts to help earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan. Jell-o shots were joined by 150 beers on the buses, three kegs of Great Divide Titan and four of Steinlager.

Seven bus loads of fans came out from the Bulldog, including over 250 Portland Timbers fans that joined the Bulldog Supporters Club in ushering in the new season. The Timbers were excellent guests, and hopefully more supporters groups will join us in the future at our events. This tailgate truly represents what soccer in America can and should be; two passionate groups of fans supporting their teams to the fullest, but coming together to share in a wonderful event.

Prior to the match, fans enjoyed the great food, beer, and camaraderie one comes to expect from a Bulldog tailgate. Spontaneous games of keepy-upy, corn-hole, and the brand new foosball table highlighted the social scene. Inside the stadium the Bulldog provide cut-out replicas of the MLS Cup and 50 brand new flags. While the flags and the cut-outs provided a great visual spectacle it was the great singing and chants led by Matt Baumgartner and Jon Forget that truly inspired our lads on the pitch.

In the eight minute a persistent move along the touch line from Forward Omar Cummings set up a smashing drive from midfielder Jeff Larentowicz. In the 29th minute Omar Cummings good work was rewarded with a goal of his own as he darted inside the box, shot low at Aiden Brown, and then followed up his rebound to score in the lower right corner of the net. One minute later a deft pass from the Captain Pablo Mastroeni played Jamie Smith in for him to smash the goal of a game, a twenty-five yard strike into the top right corner. The Timbers scored late on to make it 3-1, but by that time a party atmosphere reverberated around Dicks Sporting Goods Park led from the Bulldog Supporters and the terraces. The party carried on for hours back at the Bulldog, and with a fantastic event like the first tailgate and a great win from our Rapids we can all expect a brilliant season.
